API 6D Valve Selection Guide for Gulf Oil & Gas Projects

2025-01-22·8 min read

Selecting the correct API 6D valve for Gulf pipeline and process applications requires understanding pressure class, temperature, service fluid, and actuation requirements. This guide covers the decision framework used by Gulf EPC engineers.

What is API 6D?

API 6D — "Specification for Pipeline and Pigging Valves" — is the American Petroleum Institute standard governing the design, manufacturing, assembly, testing, and documentation of valves used in petroleum, petrochemical, and natural gas pipeline systems.

API 6D covers gate, ball, check, plug, and butterfly valves. In Gulf projects, API 6D is the baseline specification for virtually all pipeline isolation and control valves — from wellhead to terminal.

The Selection Decision Tree

Step 1: Valve Function

FunctionRecommended Type
On/Off isolationGate or Ball valve
Throttling/controlGlobe valve
Non-return (flow direction)Check valve (swing, lift, or dual-plate)
Large-bore pipelineTriple Offset Butterfly
Positive isolation (maintenance)DBB (Double Block & Bleed)

Step 2: Pressure Class

ANSI/ASME pressure classes define the pressure-temperature rating of the valve body and flanges:

  • Class 150 (PN20): General utility, low-pressure service
  • Class 300 (PN50): Standard refinery process service
  • Class 600 (PN100): High-pressure process and wellhead
  • Class 900: High-pressure oil and gas
  • Class 1500: Very high pressure — wellhead, gas injection
  • Class 2500: Ultra-high pressure — deep well, subsea

For Gulf applications, Class 300 and Class 600 cover the majority of refinery and gas plant work. LNG and gas injection projects typically require Class 900 or 1500.

Step 3: Temperature Range

  • Standard carbon steel: -29°C to +538°C (most Gulf process service)
  • Low-temperature steel (LTCS): -46°C to +425°C (cold utility, cold service)
  • Cryogenic: Down to -196°C (LNG service, liquid nitrogen)
  • High-temperature alloy: Up to +750°C (hot section, steam)

Shanggao's cryogenic valve series covers -196°C per BS 6364, with extended bonnets, PTFE/graphite packing, and helium leak testing at operating temperature.

Step 4: Service Fluid and Metallurgy

ServiceMaterial
Standard hydrocarbonCarbon steel (A216 WCB, A105)
Sour service (H₂S)NACE MR0175 compliant — requires hardness limits
Corrosive serviceStainless steel A182 F316, duplex
High-temperatureCr-Mo alloy (F11, F22, F91)
CryogenicLow-temperature steel, austenitic SS

Step 5: Fire-Safe Certification

For all hydrocarbon service valves, Gulf operators and EPC specifications routinely require API 607 fire-safe certification. Fire-safe valves maintain a degree of sealing even after elastomeric seals are destroyed by fire, using metal-to-metal backup seats.

Shanggao's ball valves and butterfly valves carry API 607 certification as standard.

Step 6: Actuation

ApplicationActuator
Manual, occasional operationHandwheel, lever, or gear operator
Emergency shutdown (ESD)Spring-return pneumatic (fail-safe)
Modulating controlPositioner-equipped pneumatic or electric
Remote/automatedElectric with limit switches and SCADA integration

Shanggao Valve: Gulf's API 6D Source

Shanghai Shanggao High & Medium Pressure Valve Co. holds six individual API 6D certificates — an unusually comprehensive coverage across gate, ball, check, globe, and butterfly valve types. First-tier supplier to CNPC, CNOOC, and SINOPEC, with an AAA enterprise credit rating.

  • DN10–DN3000, Class 150–2500 (PN6.4–42 MPa)
  • -196°C cryogenic to +750°C high-temperature
  • Carbon steel, stainless, duplex, nickel alloy, chrome-moly
  • Factory-assembled valve-actuator packages
